Chelsea are never far away from a transfer rumour. Their owner Roman Abramovich has bottomless pockets, and the rumour mill is suggesting that even though Rafa Benitez is an interim manager, he will be allowed to dictate who comes in and goes out over the coming months.
The most popular rumour doing the rounds is that big-boned Frank Lampard will not get a contract extension past Summer 2013. Chelsea have an embarrassment of midfield riches, and Lamps is not getting any younger. He’s a big earner at the club and presumably won’t be happy to warm the bench. Surely a lucrative year or two in the MLS or the middle-east beckons before retirement.
A stranger, but no less persistent rumour is that Arsenal‘s mercurial forward Theo Walcott is on his way to Chelsea. Like Lampard, Walcott’s contract expires at the end of the season, and if he’s not going to sign a new one, Arsenal may be keen to cash in on him while they still can – after all, its what they did with Robin Van Persie. Walcott may be happy to move as Arsenal resemble a sinking ship at the moment.
The question is, do Chelsea need him? In Hazard, Oscar, Marin, and Mata, Chelsea have a plethora of attacking midfield options. They could do with another striker, but Walcott is not an out and out No. 10. He may get more money and play for a more successful club, but there’s no guarantee it will the right move for him at all.
The final rumour is far more straightforward. Radmael Falcao is the most sought after player in Europe. He’s scored a hatful of goals for this years La Liga surprise package Athletico Madrid. The Colombian has been on the radar of big teams for a while, and it seems only a matter of time before the auction begins. Chelsea are very rich and really could do with a decent striker. It’s only a matter of time surely?
