Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger aren’t ready to rest on their laurels this season.
Despite the fact that the Gunners are in the process of signing forward Theo Walcott to a new, long-term deal, they still have their sights set on making a move during the January transfer window that could help them make the necessary push to stay atop the EPL standings.
One possible move could be signing 25-year-old Bundesliga star Adam Szalai away from Mainz.
Szalai is believed to have been targeted as an alternate option to striker Olivier Giroud in the Arsenal lineup. He has proven throughout the current season that he’s capable of making an impact on offense, having already netted nine goals for Mainz on the year. If the Gunners can land Szalai and find a fit for him in their starting lineup, the outstanding striker could become a contributor in a big hurry.
The Hungarian striker has a £15 million release clause in his current contract, which puts him within the reasonable price range for Wenger and Co. It’s not clear whether or not that clause will kick in now or until summer, so Arsenal might have to wait to land Szalai. If other interested clubs such as Borussia Dortmund or Wolfsburg make bids now, though, the Gunners might be forced to part with extra purse in order to acquire his services.
At this point, it’s still uncertain whether or not Arsenal has any real interest in Szalai considering their situation with Walcott. If they are, though, don’t question for a second that Wenger won’t do whatever it takes to get the player he wants.
