In June of 2011 it was announced that Ottawa was given an expansion team in the North American Soccer League. More than a year and a half later, they finally have come up with an official name for the team.

After having a “name the team campaign,” more than 4,000 suggestions were collected before the choice of Ottawa Fury FC was chosen.

“We are so very grateful to everyone who participated in the naming campaign,” said John Pugh, President of Ottawa Fury FC. “We received many good suggestions and, after much deliberation, no name surpassed that of the Ottawa Fury, which already associates Ottawa with success on the field and stability off the field across North America.”

The team is now working on a logo. They are set to join the NASL starting in 2014. Also set to come into the NASL in 2014 is a future team in Indianapolis, but their name has not been released yet.

“The Ottawa Fury brand is well respected in both Canada and the United States,” said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. “The hard work that has been put into this project will ensure success both on and off the field for many years to come. We are excited that Ottawa’s first kick in NASL at the new Lansdowne Stadium is just around the corner.”

Now we know that the Furry have at least a name. In the year to come, we shall see what their logo looks like, but for now we know the Fury brand continues on in Ottawa.
