There has been a lot that has been made of Norwich’s decision to make a signing before the end of the season. Some people have speculated that the deal might be dead if the club weren’t able to retain their Premier League status.
This is yet more evidence that it doesn’t matter what you do, some people will simply never be satisfied. It should also be noted that Ricky van Wolfswinkel was on the radar during the January transfer window. And I would suggest that had the club been quoted £8.5m then, the deal would have happened then.
Therefore, it’s a bit silly for fans to suggest that the deal should not be happening now. Also, let’s be honest our status in the league is pretty much assured. We are just looking for a few more points to make it official.
It’s clear that this is one player that has been on the radar for some time, and the process of building a team is an ongoing one. At Norwich, we have been used to a situation for so long where players have either not arrived or things have been left too late.
This time the club has shown serious ambition and been very proactive to capture the player. An opportunity has arisen that has allowed us to do that outside the transfer window. That has allowed us to avoid competition and get a player for a cut-price. I really don’t see how anyone can see that as negative.
