I think most of us would agree that it has been a perfectly decent second season in the Premier League for Norwich City this campaign so far. However, it’s never going to be possible for everything to be perfect. A lot of the attacking play from Paul Lambert’s era has now gone and been replaced with a more defensive stance from Chris Hughton.
This has led to more clean sheets and tighter games where the defense has generally played very well. But the goals have certainly been lacking as well as the entertainment. And the factor that sums that up is a top scorer that has just five goals this season.
This is certainly a stat that the club will want to change next season. So, it is no real surprise to see Norwich splashing the cash on Ricky van Wolfswinkel. And this is a sign of the natural way that Hughton wants to progress his team. He has obviously looked at the situation when he took over from Lambert and decided that the defense was the priority.
This was certainly an understandable judgement call because teams that are strong at the back don’t usually get relegated. Therefore, he knew that he had to tighten things up significantly and for the most part, he has managed to do that.
I think the majority of Norwich fans would agree that his signing of Sebastien Bassong played a big part in doing that. And it’s natural to think that Norwich will evolve into a more attacking outfit next season and if that includes a hat-full of goals for a certain Dutch striker, then so much the better.
