New York Red Bulls Acquire Forward Andre Akpan
On Mar. 28 the New York Red Bulls acquired Andre Akpan from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a conditional 2015 MLS Draft pick. New York has gotten off to a rocky start and has not found a win in their first four games. This trade might help New York find more success finding the net, but it also might allude to worse injury news to some Red Bulls forwards.
Thierry Henry and Fabian Espindola have not practiced this week and they will be a game time decision for the Red Bulls’ game against the Philadelphia Union. Akpan might make his Red Bull debut tomorrow, but we won’t know for sure until game time. He is one of a few options if Henry or Espindola is not available.
New York is excited with the acquisition of Akpan. If he does find time this weekend, he might help end New York’s issue of not finding quality shots on net. New York has had many offensive chances, but many of their chances have gone way wide or high.
“Andre is strong, physical forward with MLS experience and will provide another attacking option for our coaching staff,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “We are pleased to sign him and look forward to his contributions in the coming season.”
I look forward to see if this trade actually helps New York. It is one thing to have attacking options, but New York already has stars Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill, and Juninho, but they haven’t contributed much. Goal.com writer Keith Hickey pointed out an interesting statistic which just shows how little they have contributed: “Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill, and Juninho have combined for a whopping 0 goals and 0 assists this season.”
