Xabi Alonso: Why Liverpool Must Take Advantage of this Opportunity

Several prominent papers in Spain have been reporting recently that Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso may possibly be open to a return move back to Liverpool. The Spanish maestro has yet to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu and only has a year left on his existing one.

It is imperative that Liverpool do everything in their power to attain Alonso’s signature in the summer.

Midfield is certainly an area Brendan Rodgers needs to reinforce with the ineffective Joe Allen and relatively inexperienced Jordan Henderson currently acting as understudies to Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard. Alonso would add some steel and flair to a relatively weak spine that Liverpool suffer from as well as acting as a deep lying play maker allowing Gerrard license to pour forward.

With regards to cost and outlay that will be required to poach Alonso from Madrid, a figure around the $10 million mark should be enough to secure his signature according to some sources in Spain. Alonso would probably command a weekly salary of £90,000 per week as well which is on par with Liverpool’s top earners so there’s no potential pitfalls to scupper this deal there.

The only real stumbling block with regards to this deal is that in Madrid Alonso gets a basic salary of $120,000 per week and is also paid bonuses for achievements as well as a share of his image rights. Whether or not Liverpool would be able to match the image rights clause in Alonso’s current contract is not known but they will be able to offer substantial bonuses due to John Henry’s insistence at using new incentive based contracts.

All this writer knows is that this deal has to happen in the summer. It’s essential for the club’s development and this writer’s sanity.
