Manchester United fans that may have hoped their beloved Cristiano Ronaldo would make a return in the next few years will be disappointed to hear that Real Madrid are expected to extend his contract in the near future.

During Madrid’s official supporters club event this weekend, club president Florentino Pérez spoke out on various situations including one of the most poignant – Ronaldo’s long-term future.

The members asked Perez about the situation to which he replied:

“We are going to renew Cristiano’s contract imminently”

Question marks have surrounded the relationship between 28-year-old Ronaldo and the club in recent times, as it’s believed Ronaldo doesn’t feel loved by the fans or the management. It’s obvious Jose Mourinho isn’t quite the father figure that Sir Alex Ferguson was to Ronaldo, and therefore the idea of returning to Manchester United may well have been present in his mind. But as things seemed to have calmed down since the turn of the year, Ronaldo appears a bit happier now.

Perez perhaps described the club’s mindset best himself during the event as he said:

“We’ve inherited a massive legacy and it is our duty to maintain and improve it. We’ve only made it this far by sticking together. You mustn’t forget that. We can argue amongst ourselves, but unity is the way forward”

Ronaldo’s form this season has been quite incredible, having found the net 50 times in 49 games. In my opinion, I’d love to see him return to both Manchester United and the Premier League as it would be a slightly fairytale affair. But in reality there is a sense that Ronaldo has much more to achieve right now in Madrid, and it’s likely he’ll have a new manager next season which may make him feel far better about life, whilst Champions League glory in Spain is something he has yet to achieve.

Real Madrid take on German side Borrussia Dortmund this Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. You can read about the mind-games between Mourinho and Jurgen Clopp by clicking here. Or you can read about the appeal of Borrussia Dortmund here.
