There were countless positives to be taken from Tottenham‘s stunning comeback against Manchester City — Gareth Bale‘s fitness and Jermain Defoe’s return to the score-sheet, for instance.
Tottenham have desperately needed another clinical goalscorer for months now, as Emmanuel Adebayor and Defoe have not been on form. They have rather relied on Bale’s goals over the last few months, but if Defoe can return to his optimum level, it would be the perfect time for him to go on a goal-scoring streak.
Defoe’s goal against Manchester City was a microcosm of what the England International is all about — chasing after the through ball, cutting in and smashing it into the far corner. There are few players who do this better than Defoe.
Although Vincent Kompany should have maybe done better as he failed to show Defoe onto his weaker left foot, the goal was emphatic enough to suggest Tottenham’s star striker has re-discovered his goal-scoring touch.
Tottenham needed goals from Defoe, Bale and Clint Dempsey to overcome a solid and determined Manchester City side who took the lead after just five minutes. But when Tottenham scored their first, they ripped the champion’s defense apart seemingly effortlessly.
Tottenham still have much to do in this Champions League race. They face relegation battlers Wigan Athletic at the weekend in a bid to keep pace with Arsenal and Chelsea, and really do need their whole team to step up now. The win over Manchester City was a promising sign indicating that they might have just found their form.
