Tottenham lacked urgency against Wigan

The Premier League match which promised to affect both ends of the table one way or another ended in a draw, and perhaps a disappointing one for both teams.

Tottenham had the majority of possessions, but lacked finesse and precision throughout the game. It never seemed likely that one of the Spurs’ midfielders would pick out an onside forward who would find the goal — in fact, it looked a constant struggle.

Losing Mousa Dembele certainly didn’t help Tottenham, as they were rather static and lacked urgency in midfield. Tom Huddlestone enjoyed large amounts of space and time when he had possession, but failed to really take advantage of it.

Maybe not introducing the returning Aaron Lennon earlier was an error by Andre Villas-Boas. Having the pace of the England international in advanced positions for a longer period of time could have allowed Tottenham to create more clear-cut chances.

The Spurs’ two goals were both scrappy and unsightly, emphasizing the difficulty Tottenham were having in creating chances with Wigan’s pressure. Tottenham’s lethargy is questionable at this particular time of the season, especially considering the lift last weekend’s win over Manchester City should have given them.

Of course Wigan deserve credit, and they never seem to lose at this stage of the season. But the Spurs, with their form, talents and incentives, should have had enough to break Wigan down for a win.

Now, Tottenham must hope champions Manchester United can earn a result at the Emirates tomorrow against Arsenal. Otherwise, the Lilywhites could find themselves four points behind. Champions League qualification is no longer in Tottenham’s hands.
