Gareth Bale left the PFA Awards with not only the Player of the Year award, but the Young Player of the Year award too. He’s had an outstanding season, matured and has become a household name in the football world. But did he deserve it?

Bale fought off competition from Luis Suarez and Robin Van Persie to the night’s main and most prestigious award, with the Liverpool man finishing in second place followed by the Dutchman.

Firstly, I believe Suarez deserved to win the award. Love him or hate  him, he’s been the inspiration behind almost everything positive Liverpool has achieved this season, and is truly world class. I think his personality has something to do with it, and giving the players the say on who wins obviously affected the results. He often makes himself a pest in every single way during game, frustrating defenders.

Van Persie being third could also be considered a little bemusing to some. In his debut season at Manchester United, he’s sure to be the Premier League‘s top goalscorer, and set to collect a winner’s medal.

Bale won the Player of the Year two years ago in the 2010-11 season. Is it really necessary to give him the Young Player of the Year award two years after winning the senior award? Surely, they should have recognized Christian Benteke or Eden Hazard for the youth category.

But, Gareth Bale joins the very elite list of players to win both awards in one season. Following in the footsteps of Andy Grey and of course Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s on his way to that level. Congratulations to Gareth Bale.
