Speaking at the pre-match press conference for the Southampton game, Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas said he’d been given assurances that star man Gareth Bale will not be departing, regardless of Champions League qualification.

If this is true, it’s great news for Tottenham. They can move on, start thinking positively in the transfer window about ways to improve. But, there promises to be mountainous speculation consistently surrounding the Welshman throughout the summer, that I can promise you.

Bale has had an incredible week personally, being named the Players’ Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. He’s only the second person to ever do that, after Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007. Anyone else seeing a little pattern emerging?

Bale is integral for Tottenham. He’s really become one of the best players in the world, an accomplishment which was unforeseeable just three or four years ago.

Now operating in the middle, Bale looks like he could score or create something at any moment. Andre Villas-Boas has to take great credit for this development in his game. He’s gone from being a left-back whose set pieces were considered one of his greatest attributes, to a powerful winger who explodes past defenders, to a 20-30 goal a season player. Truly remarkable.

The Spurs just need a few more star players so they can challenge for titles and other major honors. But to get into that position where they can attract these kind of names, they need Champions League football.

It won’t be easy to secure it this term, but with this Welsh wizard, anything is possible.
