5 Bold Predictions for the Champions League Final

Champ League
Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

The Champions League Final is on Saturday between two of the fiercest rivals in the German sporting world, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The Champions League wound down in spectacular fashion with Dortmund barely holding on against Real Madrid to win due to a 4-0 win in the first leg, while Munich blasted Lionel Messi and Barcelona by winning 7-0 on aggregate.

This is the first time in history that there has been an all-German Champions League Final. Both teams boast some of the most talented athletes in the world and have two of the best coaches in the world. Bayern easily won the regular season Bundesliga title with many weeks left in the season, but Dortmund has the support of the majority of Bundesliga fans. Rule number one of the Bundesliga: if you do not support Bayern, you root against them.

These teams are going to fight harder than they have all season. Dortmund star Mario Götze is going to Bayern at the end of the season (he won’t be playing due to injury) which is a story line that tends to happen all over Germany.

Bayern and Dortmund don’t like each other. Last time they met, Bayern received five yellow cards after only receiving eight all season long. Bayern is the rich team that buys some of the world’s best athletes, and Dortmund is the Cinderella team that was not expected to make it past the round of sixteen in the Champions League. On Saturday, they will meet as the two best football clubs in Europe.

Here are five bold predictions for the Champions League Final.

2 of 6

No. 5 Borussia Dortmund Scores First

Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

Bayern clearly has the better money and talent between the two teams, but Dortmund plays better as a team. Expect them to catch Bayern by surprise and score somewhere in the first half-hour to put pressure on Bayern.

No. 4 Mario Götze’s Absence Will Be Obvious

Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

Götze is headed to Bayern at the end of the season, but an injury will keep him out of the Champions League Final against his future club. Dortmund’s midfield is a key aspect of their game, and Marco Reus will still shine, but Götze’s absence will definitely hinder the team’s offensively minded midfield.

No. 3 There Will Be a Red Card for Bayern

Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

Bayern only had eight yellow cards all season long; they received five in the end of the season meeting between the two clubs. This will be a physical, hard fought game. Expect the dismissal to come from a player getting a second yellow card after a pointless one early on – like Arjen Robben.

No. 2 Thomas Müller Scores a Crucial Goal

Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

There isn’t a player in the world that scores more goals when it counts. Müller tends to score in tournaments and disappear in the regular season; expect Müller to score late in the game.

No. 1 Borussia Dortmund Wins in Penalties

Mitchell Gunn-USA TODAY Sports

Dortmund showed that its defense has the will power and the strength to hold off Bayern’s talented offense. Expect this game to be low scoring and make it into penalties with Dortmund coming on top - Die Schwarzgelben (the black-yellows) want it more.
