Manchester City is looking to retool their squad after a disappointing season that saw them go trophy-less. A season consisting of a plethora of missed chances, City’s forwards have been put under the microscope for their inability to be as clinical as they were a year ago. A team as talented as City doesn’t need to make major adjustments, but add to the functional depth of the squad. They lacked those players on the bench that could add a different dimension and a ‘Plan B’ when the attack got congested.

City has three main areas of need on their squad: wingers who stay out wide, another defensive midfielder, and a defender. The side would deploy Samir Nasri and David Silva out wide at the start of games, but their natural tendency is to cut in to the middle of the pitch, which ends with a logjam in the attack.

City should also look to add another defensive midfielder. Javi Garcia was a disappointment this season, and although Jack Rodwell has tons of potential, his injury issues are concerning and should be taken into account. Defensively, with the announcement of Kolo Toure agreeing to terms with Liverpool and Joleon Lescott’s uncertain future, City need to add another center-back to keep up with the defensive standards Mancini set at the Etihad.

Manuel Pelligrini, of Malaga CF in Spain, has been heavily linked with City even before Mancini got the sack. Pelligrini favors a system that utilizes players out on wide areas on the pitch, something City’s attack needed under Roberto Mancini. . As the club ushers in a new era, expect them to spend big again this summer as they look to improve. Here are five players City should look to add in this coming transfer window.

Navas, a true winger, has been reported to relish the opportunity to work with Manuel Pelligrini. Having been with his hometown club Sevilla for his whole career, Navas seems ready to make a switch to a bigger club. Homesickness issues may keep him in Spain however, as Real Madrid is also interested in the speedy Spaniard.

The 22-year-old Argentine of Serie-A side Roma is coming off a big season, scoring 15 goals with five assists. He is incredibly skillful on the ball and his dribbling ability can be devastating to opposing defenses. He’s able to play in a central attacking role, but he’s also very dangerous when deployed out on the right wing.

Ilkay Gundogan

Gundogan, 22, is currently plying his trade for German side Borussia Dortmund. Sure, it may be a reach to think Dortmund would consider an offer for him after selling Mario Gotze, but City should certainly test Dortmund’s resolve. As comfortable playing deeper in the midfield as he is playing in advanced positions, Gundogan is on track to being an international superstar.

Paulinho

The Brazilian powerhouse midfielder has blocked moves to Europe in the past in favor of staying with Corinthians. However, at the age of 24, the time appears to be right for Paulinho to showcase his talents on the biggest of stages. Paulinho has been compared to Yaya Toure, and what better way for City to make a transition as Yaya gets older than to let Paulinho play alongside one of the game’s best?

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Greek defender, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, made his first professional appearance at the age of 15 for Olympiakos in Greece. He lacks pace physically, but is a very strong player for a 21-year-old, and his youth can also show through emotional outbursts. With the physical tools he has, and at his age, he just may be worth the risk.
