Newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Monaco has made a huge splash in the transfer window, signing arguably the most coveted forward available in Radamel Falcao. The deal is reported to earn him $90 million US  over a five-year span. Falcao, 27, has scored 52 goals in La Liga during his time at Atletico Madrid, and has been mentioned in the same breath as Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for his exploits.

There have been plenty of doubts about Falcao possibly joining Monaco. Detractors are saying it’s simply a move for financial reasons. It’s also been said that a move to Monaco would threaten his legacy, as he is not choosing the destination that would provide him with the greatest competition and exposure.

Falcao was the target of clubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Chelsea FC; all three clubs would have provided him with the biggest of stages to further his legacy.

It’s hard to criticize him for accepting the offer to join Monaco not only for the amount of money reported in the deal, but he does have the chance to headline a club backed by vast financial resources and aggressively adding top talent. As a Columbian international, his place will never be in question for his national side should he stay fit  for the duration of his contract.

Another reason why Falcao made the right decision for himself is because by joining Ligue 1, his only roadblock to potential domestic trophies will be Paris St. Germain. Additionally, their chances of qualifying for the Champions League is more than reasonable considering the players they have already added.

I think Falcao made a good decision in his move to Monaco. He’ll be the face of a club that will undoubtedly be led to new heights. For Monaco, this was clearly a solid signing with the potential to pay huge dividends.
