Jan Vertonghen signed for Tottenham from Ajax last summer, and has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most formidable defenders, as well as an outstanding footballer.
He’s been described as a ‘Rolls Royce of a player’, as he makes everything look effortless. To be honest, he’s quite capable of playing in a variety of roles, demonstrated by his ability to do a lot more than just defend. The Tottenham faithful certainly considers him a favorite and a potential captain in the years to come. He really does have much to offer, and earned his place in the PFA Team of the Year.
There’s bound to be interest from elsewhere if he continues to impress. Vertonghen would really suit Barcelona. He can move, pass and score, something the Spanish giants require from all their defenders. This modern-day central defender seemed eager to come to Tottenham from the start, and, now that he’s here, the North London club will not be looking to let him go.
Still only 26, Vertonghen has all the tools to remain a Tottenham figure for 10 years, something which Spurs don’t normally have. There was Ledley King, but his career was tragically disrupted and ultimately executed.
Michael Dawson has also been with the club a long time, but the Englishman doesn’t quite have the class of Vertonghen. If Tottenham can hold onto their Belgian star, he will only continue to excel.
He’s another player in Tottenham’s possession who should be playing in the Champions League. If Spurs can’t acquire a spot next season, players like this must leave.
