Turkish champion Galatasaray is looking to strengthen its midfield by pondering the signing of Chelsea and Nigerian international star John Obi Mikel. He has been in London since 2006, but at the age of 26 he still has a lot to offer the club and the Turks are keen on his signature.
He has never scored in the Premier League, but to be fair, his job is to be the defensive midfield general. He protects the back line of defense as best he can by making vital stops in his own final third or even up the field before there is any chance of danger. He is strong, intelligent, has vision and is not afraid of contact. His ability as a player would be beneficial to many teams around Europe.
Since he is a key figure of the team, Mikel would have to be pried away from Jose Mourinho‘s grasp. His relationship with Gala coach Fatih Terim is strong, so he may agree to allow the Nigerian to leave to Istanbul. However, there are other teams that could also be interested in his services.
AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli of the Serie A all have holes in their midfields that could be filled by this player.
Kevin Prince Boateng of AC can play defensively but is more of a number 10 now that he attacks and creates. Mikel could be right behind him to hold up the fort.
Napoli’s Gokhan Inler is being looked at by other clubs, so if he leaves, Mikel could jump right into the starting eleven and make things happen.
Inter Milan have not had the best of seasons this past term in Italy. They need a player that can make things difficult for opponents by captaining the defensive third of the club. He can make a difference for sure at Inter.
Joining Galatasaray would allow him to play for a league champion and Champions League soccer. He would be adored by the fans in one of the most beautiful stadiums not just in Istanbul, Turkey, but in the entire world. He could be a vital part of a three peat and a strong standing presence in the UCL.
With that said, if he does not stay at Chelsea, Galatasaray is the destination for him, plain and simple.
