Chelsea Turn Attention To Robert Lewandowski as Edinson Cavani Bid Stalls

Witters Sport-USA TODAY Sports

Chelsea’s long standing pursuit of Napoli forward Edinson Cavani is set to come to an end with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho apparently turning his attentions to Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

Mourinho has become increasingly frustrated with Napoli’s stance over Cavani with the Italian club wanting more than £50 million for the player which is absolutely ridiculous given his tendency to go through lasting dips throughout a season. Stephen El Shaarawy, a more prolific forward, would be available for half the cost, so Cavani’s price tag is therefore astronomically ludicrous.

No wonder Mourinho is fed up and apparently turned his attention to a far more viable option, one that could actually come to fruition. Poland and Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has made no secret of his desire to leave Dortmund and was expected to join Bayern Munich, but with that deal falling through, Mourinho is now in a position to poach Lewandowski and bring him to the Premier League.

With the signing of Andre Schurrle and with Romelu Lukaku due to return from a loan spell, Fernando Torres could find himself the most likely casualty in any deal to bring Lewandowski to Stamford Bridge. Mourinho is apparently privately concerned about the Spaniard’s barren spell in the Premier League and is looking for a younger, more alert hit man to lead his line. Torres would be made available for about £15 million, so a mooted swap deal could be Torres to Dortmund plus about £10 million.

Lewandowski would be an excellent addition to Chelsea, his four goals against Real Madrid is testament to that, and the allure of playing under Mourinho could prove too much for the Pole to turn down.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet on this one happening reasonably soon.
