Serie A: Napoli May Have Work to Do

Edinson Cavani

Presse Sports-USA TODAY Sports

The Serie A is a top league that is run by the teams at the top. Juventus have won the last two titles, with Napoli on their heels.

Napoli is a team that contains skilled players, a beautiful stadium, a smart coach and fans who never stop believing. A team like this deserves to be at the top and deserves to have a squad that can make things happen. However, this summer, their star striker may be leaving.

Edinson Cavani, 26, has been the team’s leading scorer for quite some time now, which is why bigger clubs are after his services. He is worth roughly $50 million and the interested parties are not afraid to take that gamble. He plays almost every game, scores almost every game and understands that it is his job as the lone striker to capitalize when need be.

Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain are the interested sides that do not wish to give up any time soon in the race to win his signature. Therefore,  it is all but certain that he will be leaving the club in the coming weeks.

A suitable replacement for him would be Luis Suarez, who plays with him up top for Uruguay. He can play as a striker or winger in the 4-3-3 setup, which makes him an asset for attack-minded squads. He currently plays for Liverpool but may very well be on his way out after receiving a lengthy ban for biting an opposing player.

Napoli favors the 3-4-2-1 formation, which is dangerous defensively but brilliant offensively as an attack can be orchestrated with seven players. This style has allowed them to finish in second place behind Juventus. If they want to become champions, maybe they should switch to the 4-3-3 and simply have the wing backs push up during attacks and retreat when defending. A star striker is needed for either formation.

Before the previous season, Esequiel Lavezzi departed Naples and joined PSG. That could be a factor in Cavani’s decision. With one star already gone and another on his way out, this team needs at least one star to join their ranks to maintain their dominance towards the top of the Serie A.
