Borussia Dortmund — Bundesliga and Champions League runner-up to Bayern Munich, have signed up the rising Armenian international midfield star, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The man, who has played at Shaktar Donetsk since 2010, scored 38 goals in 72 appearances. His vision, skill, energy and precision on the ball make him dangerous — exactly what Dortmund need after the sale of Mario Gotze to rivals B. Munich.
Liverpool were rumored to have been tracking him since the end of this past season, but could not make anything happen. Perhaps Brendan Rogers did not want to invest $25 Million in a player who hasn’t done much on the international stage. He also may have thought that there was no need for his services with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Suso still very much on board.
Gotze’s vacant number 10 will be worn by Mkhitaryan. In fact, he already scored his first goal for the club in a friendly yesterday against FC Basel. He seemed extremely comfortable with his new teammates, which is a good sign for things to come at the club.
Last season, Dortmund lost the Super Cup, Bundesliga and the Champions League final to Bayern Munich. This season, they will look to bounce back and defeat them in every possible competition … in fact, they have their chance in the German Super Cup when the two teams will face off once again.
Marco Reus, Robert Lewandowski and now Henrikh Mkhitaryan are the expected attacking stars to carry this team to new glory. Winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, Super Cup and of course, the Champions League are all goals they can realistically achieve … if, and only if, they avoid injury and play the same dazzling soccer they did last season with a touch of improvement on their defense.
Can Dortmund do it? Find out next season, which commences later on in August.
