Major League Soccer announced the Portland Timbers and JELD-WEN Field as the 2014 MLS All-Star Game host. This announcement is not that surprising as Portland has one of the loudest, proudest, and most iconic MLS fan bases. Their supporters are best known for chainsawing off a piece of wood for every Timbers goal.
It was only a matter of time before Portland had their chance of hosting. They deserve it for two main reasons. First, Portland is one of the best MLS squads this season, and secondly their fans’ pride for all things Timbers is great to watch on national television. MLS commissioner Don Garber echoed their passion and devotion they have as fans.
“The Portland Timbers and their passionate fans have certainly earned the honor of hosting the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.” This match will showcase to an international audience the incredible devotion to the game in the Pacific Northwest that serves as one of the most important stories for our league.”
MLS’ latest All-Star Game host announcement was another slam dunk. Philadelphia was a great 2012 host, Kansas City’s opportunity should be great, and Portland and its fans look to put on a great show in 2014.
The 2014 MLS All-Star opponent is yet to be determined, but it will most likely be a professional European soccer squad. For those who don’t know, MLS All-Stars will take on AS Roma in this year’s All-Star Game. 2013 is the first year that the MLS All-Stars will not face either other MLS All-Stars or an EPL squad.
MLS and Don Garber made a great choice by naming Portland as 2014 All-Star Game hosts.
