Throat Cancer Recurrence Forces FC Barcelona Head Coach Tito Vilanova to Step Down
Throughout the day rumors were swirling that FC BarcelonaHead Coach Tito Vilanova FC Barcelona has confirmed Vilanova has left the club so he can focus on his health and fight throat cancer yet again.
First off, stepping down from a club to move on elsewhere is one thing and is usually filled with some frustration from loyal fans. However, I doubt anyone is disliking Vilanova’s decision to focus on his health and put soccer and Barcelona on the back burner. He beat cancer once, and Vilanova seems focused to beat it once again so he can return to coaching.
Most, if not all of us have been somehow affected by a loved one or friend battling cancer. Sickness and cancer, in general, seem to unite society and rival soccer squads. I guarantee you every La Liga team will be hoping and praying for Vilanova’s full recovery.
Barcelona president Sandro Rosell briefed the media along side the team’s players:
“The news I have is something that you never want to give. After evaluating Tito’s routine tests, the treatment to follow will be incompatible with being the first-team coach. I want to ask for respect for the privacy of this process.”
It is unfortunate Vilanova had to step down, but like Rosell said it would interfere too much with being a coach, and I personally think it is a good move to focus on health first and foremost.
For now, Barcelona will be start looking for a new manager as Vilanova starts his cancer treatments.
