Turkey and Galatasaray head coach Fatih Terim has acquired two of the most intelligent and important pieces to the Turkish national team in Hakan Calhanoglu and Ersan Gulum. These two players were eligible to represent Germany and Australia respectively, but the invitation from “the Emperor” himself was too good to turn down.
Calhanoglu recently represented Turkey at the Under-20 World Cup on home soil, and produced one brilliant performance after another. As the number 10, he held onto the ball, distributed it and even scored one of the most sensational goals of the tournament against Australia from distance.
He is talented at taking long-distance shots and free kicks, which is something the senior team can use now and in the future. Currently, the youngster wears the no. 9 for Hamburg.
Gulum has played for Australia at the U-23 level and has been playing for Besiktas since 2010. As a center-back, his presence is crucial in the back line. His height, strength and calm play are very useful in tough defensive situations. He is irreplaceable for club and will soon be for his country.
Both players did not have much playing time, but by being put into crucial matches, Terim proved that his trust is definitely with those players and that trust will only continue to grow. Some may see it as security for the future to prevent them from playing in different international colors. This is definitely another legitimate reason, but with Terim, there is always a plan for the future — remember that.
