Champions League: Galatasaray Absolutely Lose In Istanbul
The Champions League kicked off today with a rematch from last season’s quarter-finals, as Galatasaray hosted Real Madrid with very high hopes. After all, they did defeat them 3-2 in the second leg last season, and deservedly so.
Tonight, they were planning on drawing, or even winning, against this mighty Spanish side. However, they ended up being embarrassed, thrashed and humble by Cristiano Ronaldo and company in front of their beloved home faithful.
The first half ended 1-0, thanks to a goal by Isco, but the sour taste in Gala’s mouth was due to an injury suffered by super forward Didier Drogba, who was replaced by Nordin Amrabat in the second half.
In the second half, Burak Yilmaz missed a golden headed chance to equalize, as his header spun towards the far post, just passing it.
After that chance for the Turkish side, they completely fell apart.
First, a defensive error led to a breakaway for Karim Benzema, who simply slotted home past Fernando Muslera. He would finish with two on the night, as the second was a simple slot home thanks to a sweet outside-the-boot cross from Ronaldo.
The most impressive performance was from Ronaldo himself, who finished off a hat-trick with a goal-of-the-season candidate (maybe), as he cut past one and dragged away from another to then slip by one more before hammering into the far right corner past a helpless Muslera.
Gala’s only goal arrived when Amrabat‘s cross from the right was booted home by substitute striker Umut Bulut.
One bright spot was the introduction of Bruma who, like Ronald0, graduated from Sporting Lisbon’s youth academy. Right after Ronaldo completed his impressive hat-trick, Bruma danced around three players before he sent a low and weak shot right to Diego Lopez.
After 2-0, the Turkish champions simply stopped playing a team game, as the wing-backs kept pushing up, leaving the game against one of the world’s best offensive talents all up to the center-backs.
This was Galatasaray’s first ever loss to Real Madrid on home soil, while it was Real Madrid’s first ever win in Turkey.
Gala sit in dead last, as FC Copenhagen managed a 1-1 home draw against the likes of Juventus.
