GEPA-USA TODAY Sports

With nearly every soccer league around the world having started up already, it is official that football madness is in full effect. And really, how could any soccer fan be upset with this?

After all, American soccer fans are given the ability to watch games nearly every day of the week, with basic cable packages carrying English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa Leagues. This allows fans the opportunity to watch nearly all of the greatest teams and players in the world consistently, an opportunity that is not afforded to people in nearly any other country in the world.

This question of who the best player in the world is brings up a very complicated debate that is difficult to come up with a perfect answer to because of the fact that fans of different teams are almost always biased towards their team's players. The differing positions in soccer that are defined by very different statistics also make this task nearly impossible.

But, we are here to turn this impossible task into a list of the 15 best soccer players in the world today by looking at the players on varying teams and leagues who play in all positions on the field.

Enjoy!

Expect Neymar to shoot up this list in future seasons as he becomes accustomed to the European game and has a chance to shine at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

When I see Sepp Blatter, I see only corruption not leadership

    • Tyler Leli

It is safe to say that you are not alone in that feeling but there is no doubting that he is the head of the soccer world at this moment in time.

  • AF_Whigs

Except we don’t get all that stuff on “basic cable” in the US. We have to pay tons extra to get any soccer channels.

    • Tyler Leli

Starting with the 2013-2014 season there have been a number of games available on most basic cable providers (Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, U-Verse) in the U.S.. NBCSN/NBC carry up to 7 Premier League Games per week, and nearly every UEFA Champions League/Europa League is on the newly minted Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. It is normally a safe bet to say that if you are not competing in at least one of these three competitions that you are likely not qualified to be one of the 15 best soccer players in the world.

      • AF_Whigs

Right – oh sure, channels are “available”, but Direct TV has NBCSN on a high-tier programming plan, two or three above what I have right now. My point is that unfortunately to watch European football in the US you have to pay extra. Just like Fox Soccer Channel used to be an an extra “sports package”, they’ve now put the new NBC sports channel in an upper tier programming package that would cost me $20+ per month more to have.

I really just want to be able to watch EPL and Champions League games without having to pay for a bunch of channels I don’t need or want.
