LA Liga: Atletico Madrid On Track For Best Season Yet
Atletico Madrid has been on a phenomenal roll recently as one of the top three sides in the nation. Whether it be finishing third in the domestic league, defeating Real Madrid to hoist the Copa Del Rey or losing out to Barcelona in the Super Cup due to aggregate away goals, the team is showing that they are here to stay.
Well, this success is owed to many people…
Firstly, we begin with the team’s head coach, Diego Simeone. The Argentine has taught this talented roster how to defend heartily, play with a large amount of possession and of course to attack with plenty of bravery. By doing all of this, the team is on fire as they are winning games left and right in three different competitions.
First, we go back to last season’s Copa Del Rey final when Atletico deservedly defeated Real Madrid in their own Santiago Bernabeu stadium to lift the trophy and call themselves cup champions at the end of that night. This came as a surprise to many but themselves as they surely felt that the result was deserved after their hard work.
The team recently allowed striker Radamel Falcao to leave the Spanish capital to join French side Monaco for big money. However, they did get to keep a striker who isn’t half bad by any means, Diego Costa. He has been scoring goals this season and last (including on against Real in the cup final).
The one player that this team recently decided to increase the contract of till 2017 is none other than Turkish international midfielder/winger Arda Turan. This young man has worked very hard to be the main playmaker on this club and he has brought about some tremendous results. His goals and assists have been crucial to the success of this Atletico side.
Right now, they sit just behind Barcelona near the top of the league due to a two-goal difference as both sides are 5-0 thus far in the domestic league campaign. When it comes tot eh UCL, Atletico defeated Zenit 3-1 to open their group campaign.
Defeating Barcelona to win the title does not seem likely, but finishing in second ahead of Real Madrid does seem reasonably since they defeated them last season in the cup final and did so deservedly. In fact, second place in the league this season should be their goal as winning the title is just a bit too premature.
