La Liga: Atletico Shock Real At The Bernabeu
The first time in a long time when Real Madrid lost at home to city rivals Atletico Madrid was back in May, by a score of 2-1 in the Copa Del Rey final. Little did any one of us know, however, that just a short five months later we would see another shock win for Atletico at the Santiago Bernabeu over Real again. This time, the win was the first time in 14 years where they were able to oust their rivals on the road in the La Liga.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria all seemed to draw a blank against an Atletico side who have now defeated Real in two straight trips to the Bernabeu, and did so deservedly. The team simply showed no fear and were motivated, focused and physically ready for the challenge on both ends of the ball.
Quietly, Atletico is becoming one of Real’s arch-rivals. Will they ever match the magnitude of the hatred between Real and Barcelona? Probably not, but they sure have a tight grip on second.
Carlo Ancelotti watched his side lose due to a counter attack, something Real truly specializes in, along with very few teams in the world. Regardless, the ball was placed through to high-flying Brazilian striker Diego Costa, who slotted past Diego Lopez. The goal seemed smartly planned out, but at the end of the day, the Real players are to blame.
The creativity seems to be missing from Los Blancos, even with Ronaldo on the scoring run that he is riding. Last night, however, he was a no-show completely, as the Atletico players trapped him by barely giving him any room to work with. This is a huge reason why they were defeated.
Now, Real trails both Atletico and Barca by five points. Regardless, it is still way too early to write anyone off of winning the title between these three sides.
