It was do or die Friday against Sporting Kansas City, but the Philadelphia Union rose to the occasion and stole three points on the road against Sporting. With the win, Philadelphia kept their playoff hopes alive heading into their final four games.
Simply put, the MLS Eastern Conference is very tight and there is very little, if any room for error. Luckily for Philadelphia, they just played their hardest game left, but they can not overlook any of their next four opponents: Toronto FC, DC United, Montreal Impact and Kansas City.
Games against DC and Montreal are on the road, while Toronto and Kansas City will come to PPL Park. With Friday’s win, the Union’s confidence is higher than it has been. Toronto and DC are holding steady in the cellar, so there is no excuses not to earn three points against both squads.
Moreover, it would not be shocking to see the Union defeat Sporting yet again, but a tie would be a solid result. The match against a solid Montreal squad should be interesting, but leaving Canada with one point isn’t out of the question. If the Union can get eight points in their last four matches, I think they can make the playoffs. Likewise, if they can get another three points against Sporting Kansas City, then they will be in better shape.
The MLS playoff race is nowhere close to being over, and it will take until the final games to settle what 10 teams make them. It is not over until the fat lady sings. Philadelphia controls their destiny at this point.
