Manchester United: Finding A Sense Of Urgency vs Sunderland

Manchester United‘s 2-1 win away at Sunderland was thanks to a new found sense of urgency in the second half, as they turned the score around to take a vital three Premier League points thanks to Adnan Januzaj‘s brace.

David Moyes’ side battled through this game. They weren’t fluent for the majority and it is evident there is still so much to work on for the new manager at his new club. But after a dismal and depressing first half, they found a new energy in the second; there was urgency throughout the side, perhaps as they realized quite how desperate things were getting.

Who knows what words Moyes said at half time, if any at all, but United stepped up to the plate against albeit weaker opposition. However, as those who challenge for titles will soon discover, you need to grind out results even when you’re not performing.

But Belgium midfielder Januzaj single handedly lit the game alight on his first Premier League start; scoring two goals to save United’s blushes. Januzaj’s confident energy was seen in glimpses during an erratic first half for United, but as things began to click a bit more in the second 45, the Belgian shone and clinched his chance to impress new boss Moyes.

As already stated though, the United team’s urgency was one of the main reasons they battled through this tough trip to the North East of England. Their play was sloppy and lacked a real cutting edge. But the desire to fight till the game had been turned around was a testament to the character and experience of a squad that has tallied so many medals over the years.

Yet as those seasoned men helped the team press forward and inevitably hold out, it was the teenage headline maker Januzaj to earn the praise and rightfully so. His ability is evidently something United can be excited about for the future, whilst he is helping spark something special into a fairly unimaginative United team currently. Moyes unsurprisingly needs time to get things running smoothly, but it is wins like this that stem from changes of mentality within a game that show things are on the right track. Januzaj needs his contract extended soon because he is looking special and United can’t risk losing another young star; you only need to look back at Paul Pogba’s exit to see why.
