Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is happy about the fast start of the Gunners in both the Premiership and the Champions League, and when he was asked about teams that could be considered as title contenders for the European tournament, he included a very surprising side.

The French manager gave an interview to Eurosport and said “I believe that teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are always title candidates, but I think that Atletico Madrid definitively needs to be on the list as well”.

And in all honesty, can anyone disagree with him?

Los Colchoneros are gathering worldwide attention due to their amazing start in La Liga where, after eight matches, they have the same 24 points Barcelona have — meaning that both sides have won their eight fixtures. In these games, Atletico have already beaten the likes of Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Sevilla.

In addition, they have a phenomenal group of young players that are eager to win something big: goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois (who’s owned by Chelsea and is considered a transfer target for Barcelona), midfielder Koke and striker Diego Costa are all very talented players that haven’t even reach their peak yet.

In fact, Diego Costa is the current pichichi of La Liga with 10 goals, two more than Lionel Messi and three more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsene Wegner made the right call to include Los Colchoneros into the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League. They have already shown they are ready to compete, and this year will be the one in which they take the next step.
