MLS: Portland vs. Seattle, Round 3
The MLS brings us the final regular season meeting between two Cascadian rivalries, the Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders. This meeting will be the first one in Portland as the first two were played on the other side.
The first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw, with the second one ending 1-0 to Seattle. Eddie Johnson was the hero that night, but he will not get the chance to be the same tomorrow night as he is on U.S. international duty. Him missing the game will not be the only problem they have.
Seattle lost 5-1 away to the Colorado Rapids last weekend before being humbled 4-1 at home against the Vancouver Whitecaps. After these two dismal losses, they have to find a way to bounce back and there is no better opponent than their arch-rivals to do it against.
Well, without Johnson and Brad Evans, it will not be easy. The good news is that if they lose here and get a result against FC Dallas next weekend, and against the Los Angeles Galaxy in their regular season finale, they will still be in playoff contention. None of these games are expected to be easy, but Seattle have the talent to get the job done.
Clint Dempsey should be available for tomorrow night’s match and since some of his international teammates will not be there to save the day, he may finally be able to score his first-ever Sounders goal when it matters the most. The first time he faced them was at home and he missed a plethora of chances. Maybe now is his moment to shine.
