There were many rumors surrounding Real Madrid during this summer’s transfer window with the impending acquisition of Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale. It was rumored that Angel Di Maria would have to be sold or demoted to a substitutes role to make way for the Welsh International.
I bet the Madrodistas are happy the Argentine International was never sold. Di Maria looks to be on his way to the best season of his career whether he is playing for Real Madrid or Argentina; he never seems to tire.
Bale is currently struggling with fitness so he hasn’t really been a consistent part of the squad all season. Regardless of when Bale returns, Di Maria has shown that it shouldn’t be him that should be sacrificed for Bale’s inclusion. Di Maria has a tremendous work-rate and a determination about him that motivates him to play better when others doubt him.
Di Maria is an out and out winger that has blistering pace, trickery and an incredible ability to dribble by defenders. He has the ability to play on either side of the pitch and has also shown brilliance when playing in the No. 10 role behind a striker.
With the performances that Di Maria has displayed so far this season, I don’t see him making way for Bale’s return. It looks like Frenchman Karim Benzema or Spanish star Isco will be sacrificed instead.
There is no doubt Di Maria is one of the most feared attackers in La Liga and always puts in good performances in the Champions League on the biggest of stages. Manager Carlo Ancelotti would be making a costly mistake if he ever got any ideas of not having Di Maria in his first team plans. But a coach with such experience knows a world-class talent when he sees one, so the Argentine should feel comfortable about his place in the squad as of now.
