The ongoing saga regarding Chelsea and their lack of a striker has taken yet another turn, but this one was finally for the better. Chelsea dismantled Schalke in a 3-0 win in today’s Champions League contest, and Fernando Torres netted a brace in the victory. The two goals were his first in the Champions League for the Blues this season, and they delivered Chelsea three points and a spot atop Group E.
Torres got things started quickly, finding space at the far post and heading home a Frank Lampard corner in the 5th minutes. Torres then sealed the match in second half, slotting his second past Timo Hildebrand in the 68th minute to finish a Chelsea break. Torres could have a had a hat trick in the 87th minute when he and Eden Hazard were alone in front of Hildebrand, but Hazard chose to find the net on his own.
Torres’ performance comes at a huge time for both him personally and for his club, as Chelsea needed this win to solidify their standing in the Champions League. The Blues will face Manchester City on Sunday, and then they have a quick turnaround to a Capitol One Cup fixture with Arsenal on Tuesday.
Samuel Eto’o netted his first Premier League goal over the weekend, and Chelsea’s weakness is suddenly looking much stronger. If Torres can live up to his salary and establish himself as the consistent No. 9 for Chelsea, they will be the favorite in the Premier League and a contender for the Champions League.
Torres’ performance today was a great start towards finding consistently effective form, and he looked like the world class striker he once was. If he can continue to play at the level he showed today, Chelsea will have solved their striker problems.
