Real Madrid defeated Juventus in their third UCL group stage match thanks to a brace form Cristiano Ronaldo. The team was strong, fast, patient and overall good in a match where they could have scored at least a total of four goals.
Their opponents managed to net a goal off of a rebound shot through Fernando Llorente. Later on in the match, defender Giorgio Chiellini was ejected due to a slap in the face to Ronaldo. The Portuguese did oversell just a bit, but the referee decided that it warranted an automatic ejection.
The disappointing aspect of Madrid’s game was the fact that they failed to continue scoring against a Juve side that were down a man for over 40 minutes. In fact, the Italian side began to play harder and push for an attack. This is not what Madrid wanted ahead of a huge derby match at the weekend away to Barcelona. If they win that game, they will be tied on points with the Catalans atop the league.
Ronaldo is still the best player on this team while the newer young talent in Illaramendi and Isco still have a long way to go. They were unable to play anywhere near the top of their game against a team that refused to show any signs of fear. They are still fresh members of the team which means that it may take a couple of seasons for them to shine, even though they cost the club nearly $80 million together.
Madrid sit atop the group and are on course to win their group if they can get a result in Italy and perhaps defeat Galatasaray at home in their fifth match.
