Ryan Giggs once again amazed us and proved many wrong with his performance during Manchester United‘s 1-0 Champions League win over Real Sociedad.
The performance that the Welsh man displayed would have been noted as impressive by any player, but take into account Giggs is a month away from reaching his 40th birthday and you simply can only have respect.
I, like many, have believed that this season is to be the last of Giggs’ playing career. But after Wednesday’s show of class, I can only now ask, just when will be the end? It is incredible. Giggs had some clever moments that stood out; bursts of pace where he managed to beat not one, but two then three men as if he had never aged.
But it was his all-around game that was so important. It’s a cliché but Giggs was, for a lot of the game, pulling the strings in United’s midfield. This is at the highest level of club football though — the Champions League. Even against a lower standard of opposition for the tournament, that is impressive. He played the full 90 and there was little to criticize.
Many doubt him when he is named on the team sheet, but the truth is Giggs somehow put out a useful night’s work once again. He has played poorly before this season, but he turned it all around and showed that the quality is still there despite his age. Wayne Rooney would get my man of the match, but Giggs is a very close second. He caught the attention, but for all the right things. He is a true great of our time. Don’t wish him away just yet.
