Coming off a stellar season where they won the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal and the UEFA Champions League under the management of Jupp Heynckes, most people thought Bayern Munich had conquered their top form as they won everything they played for.
This season, however, they look even more deadly under the direction of Pep Guardiola.
The former Barcelona manager has imprinted a passing style onto an already solid team that features some of the best players in the world like Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. The additions of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara over the course of the summer only made the team more dangerous, and after a few doubts in the preseason, they started the season on an absolute tear.
A nice campaign in the Bundesliga that have them near the top of the standings and the European Super Cup win against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea were only the first signs of the relevance this team can achieve, but where they have really shown their power has been in the European stage, where they have showcased a very good offense.
Impressive wins against CSKA Moscow and Manchester City made for a good start to the tournament, but their impressive performance against Viktoria Plzen has been the icing on the cake so far. The team has been solid in all of their lines, and it seems like they’re playing better and gaining more chemistry as the season goes on.
Bayern Munich need to be considered as perennial contenders to repeat their Champions League crown based only on what happened last season. And after seeing the way they’ve been playing, they need to be considered the favorites as they seem to be much stronger than last season.
