Even though they suffered their first shock defeat of the season at RCD Espanyol, Atletico Madrid are still deservedly second in La Liga and easily in first in their Champions League group. They have defeated the likes of FC Porto, FC Zenit and Austria Wien to be a perfect 3-for-3 with nine points to their name.

Last night, they traveled to Austria to take on Wien and ended up winning 3-0 thanks to a brace form Diego Costa and a lone goal from Raul Garcia. Speaking of Costa, he has been nothing short of amazing this season as he has notched at least 10 goals in all competitions. Honestly, that is being harsh as he has surely scored more than that.

Regardless, he is quickly becoming one of Europe’s, as well as the world’s best strikers. If he keeps happily scoring, this team can go places.

Now, when we compare the team to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, a step back needs to be taken because they have not faced those teams as of yet in Europe’s biggest competition. They can hold their own, but nerves may get the best of them as they have not made it too far in this very competition in quite some time. However, this could be their year as they are playing some of the best soccer seen by anyone at this club.

Arda Turan is this team’s number 10 and has deservedly been wearing it proudly with his skill, goals, passes and overall presence on the field for his teammates to make their jobs easier. His ability to hold the ball has allowed his teammates to make runs down the field, so all he has to do is play them through. If he continues to play well, Costa and David Villa will be happy campers when it comes to creating scoring chances.

Atletico should win their group, but could face some trouble when it comes to the knockout rounds as the real challenge lies in those stages.
