Fiorentina Could Mount A Serious Title Challenge in Serie A
Fiorentina could easily be considered as the dark horse contender to grab the Serie A title this season.
Despite the fact that AS Roma has gathered worldwide attention due to their start of the season and that both Napoli and Juventus are arguably the two better teams in Italy, nobody says much about a Fiorentina team that have also been very solid to start the year.
Fiorentina’s biggest asset is on the offensive side of the ball, where they have a great combination of skilled midfielders and talented strikers. Players like Borja Valero, Matías Fernandez, Juan Cuadrado and David Pizarro are the ones in charge on creating the opportunities that Joaquin, Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi are able to transform into goals.
Rossi has been the most pleasant surprise of the team so far. Signed from Villarreal when he was still recovering from a serious injury, the Viola side waited for him to get fit and he hasn’t disappointed. The 26-year old forward has found the back of the net 10 times already in only 13 matches, and his partnership with Gomez is already giving the team huge dividends up front.
They need to tighten things at the defensive line if they want to contend down the stretch. Despite having solid players like Stefan Savic and Gonzalo Rodriguez, their goalkeeper Neto is not very reliable so they could bid for an upgrade like Valencia’s Diego Alves if he’s made available in the January transfer window.
Fiorentina have some flaws like any team, but one thing is certain. If they’re able to maintain their attacking power throughout the season, nobody will be able to ignore their status as title contenders going into the final weeks of the year.
