After a disastrous 2012-13 season ended by a painful loss to city rivals Lazio in the Italian Cup final, Roma‘s midfielder Daniele De Rossi was said to be on his way out of the Italian capital. He was on many European big clubs’ shopping list, but De Rossi decided to stay faithful to his lifelong club.

With Francesco Totti, De Rossi is a hero for Roma fans. The midfielder, who can also play in central defense, has been at Roma since 2000, and like Totti, has turned down many offers from big clubs  to stay at Roma. When  Manchester United made an offer this summer for the Italian international, the freshly appointed Roma coach Rudi Garcia made it clear that De Rossi was going to be an important player for the team this season and insisted to keep him. After 10 games this season, De Rossi and his two midfield partners, Kevin Strootman and Miralem Pjanic, have led Roma to a perfect start, winning all 10 games and beating Napoli 2-0 and Inter 3-0 in recent weeks.

Positioned in a holding midfield role in Roma’s three man midfield, De Rossi is playing his best football again this season, proving that Garcia was right to keep him at the club. The Rome native ‘s tactical intelligence, ability in the air, physical toughness, and versatility have helped Roma keep nine ”clean sheets” this season, conceding only one goal in 10 games. De Rossi is also a very reliable center back; he was the sweeper in Cesare Prandelli‘s three-man defense when Italy tied Spain 1-1 in their first game at the Euro 2012.

De Rossi is a complete midfielder, able to play a more attacking role. He’s a very good passer of the ball and has got an excellent long-range shot. Marcelo Lippi, World Cup winner with Italy in 2006 with De Rossi in his squad, said that De Rossi was one of the most complete midfielders in the world.

De Rossi has made the right decision by staying at Roma, despite offers from many big European clubs. He has started every Roma game this season and has never been  substituted. Roma fans will thank Garcia for many years for keeping their local hero in ”The Eternal City.”
