Major League Soccer is taking a break between the legs of the Conference Finals to observe this FIFA window and while they do that, this would be the perfect time to release my list of the best players in MLS that are under the age of 25. This slideshow will feature the players who I thought were the second-best players at their position during the past season.

Originally, I was going to use the generic 4-4-2 formation to lineup my teams but after compiling all of the eligible players, there were not a suitable amount of qualifying center-backs. There were a lot of central midfielders and very quality ones at that, so I adjusted to a 3-5-2 formation with three center-mids on each squad.

I used three pieces of criteria to determine which players were qualified for the two teams. First, since this list is one of an “Under-25” flavor, the players needed to be under the age of 25 or born after Nov. 15, 1988.

The second piece of criteria was at least 20 appearances on the season, whether they were starts or substitutions. 20 appearances out of the 34 regular season comes out to just under 60 percent of the matches, which I feel gives a good amount of opportunity to see how well a player plays.

Finally, the third piece of criteria was to have logged at least 1,000 minutes of play. This eliminated those “always off the bench” players who may have appeared in more than 20 games but only logged between 15 and 30 minutes a match.

The selections that were made for these teams were done solely by me and is my opinion. If you have a comment on my selections, please feel free to leave it here on this page or send me an e-mail at tenorman85@gmail.com
