Arsenal led the Premier League table before the international break, and knowing that Liverpool had a tough match against Everton, The Gunners wanted to take advantage of that to extend their lead.
The team led by Arsene Wenger didn’t have an easy fixture by any means as they hosted Southampton, arguably the surprise team in the EPL so far, at the Emirates Stadium, but The Gunners were able to come out on top after the final whistle winning the game 2-0.
It wasn’t the best display of the season for Wenger’s boys, but much of that can easily be accredited to the tough opposition Southampton put during the whole match. The visitors were constantly pressuring Arsenal, and they didn’t let them do their usual passing game that has been so effective to start the year. Despite the troubles they had, Arsenal got the lead in the first half thanks to towering striker Olivier Giroud, who found the back of the net after 22 minutes to send Arsenal leading to the break.
Southampton pushed their lines forward in the second half, but Arsenal showed themselves very solid at the back, as they were able to clear all the attacks led by Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez. A late-penalty scored by Giroud put the game on the bag for Arsenal, and despite their lackluster play, they ended up grabbing a much needed win against a very tough rival.
It’s often said that winning teams always find a way to come out on top after the final whistle. Arsenal lacked that killer instinct in recent years, but it seems like this season, they can go all the way if they maintain this level of effort in the final stages of the campaign.
