Every single season the questions are raised regarding Ryan Giggs‘ future; when will he retire? But every single season come the winter he proves crucial to Manchester United‘s plans. At 40 years of age he is incredibly more crucial than ever before.

Giggs is not one of the first names on the United team sheet anymore. We all know that, and he knows that. He is aware that he will sit out a lot of games during the campaign, but from November until January the Welshman has time and time again proven to be a key player in United’s squad.

As the fixtures come thick and fast in all four competitions, the squad gets stretched. At those times Giggs offers his vital fresher legs. Having been used sparsely up until this Christmas period Giggs has been preparing, knowing that United will need some experience and a depth in their squad.

But at 40 it is remarkable. Perhaps even more incredible this season is that Giggs is not only performing so well, but as December arrives he will be vital to United’s plans. With Michael Carrick, the heart of United’s midfield, out injured Giggs will play a lot of games.

If there was any doubt about the quality of Giggs he has silenced it all with his masterful performance away at Bayer Leverkusen where United won 5-0. He will go down as one of modern football’s greats, but it’s mind boggling that his script is still being written. Sometimes whilst watching United I look at Giggs and just watch his movement and how capable he still is — it’s a skeptical observation. But every time he answers with a quick step over, a little shake of the hip, just like in years gone by as he teaches yet another defender not to give him the space to pick a pass. I read someone say that Giggs’ footballing brain is still in its 20s. But it’s not its in its 40s with all the experience it has gathered. The know-how and evolution is evident when Giggs performs to his late career best.

The next time Giggs starts for United it might be a frantic, cold and tough midweek fixture in the Premier League, but just watch him and take it in. This is one of the most impressive careers you will ever see still unfolding.
