Barcelona has lost its first game in La Liga this Sunday against Athletic Bilbao 1-0 at San Mames. Iker Munian was the goalscorer for the Basques. Barcelona is now joined by Atletico Madrid at the top of the league with 40 points while Real Madrid is now only three points behind.

After their first defeat of the season on Wednesday against Ajax in the Champion’s League, Barcelona was visiting a Bilbao team that hasn’t lost at home this season. For this trip in Basque country, the Catalans were without their injured goalkeeper Victor Valdes and Lionel Messi, who is still recovering from an hamstring injury. Tata Martino‘s men struggled to create chances and were dominated by a Bilbao team that deserved its victory.

The first chance of the game was from Barcelona with a shot from Neymar that was tipped over the bar by the Bilbao goalkeeper. The rest of the first half was dominated by the basque, who saw many chances from Ander Herrera, Mikael Susaeta and Munain, and came very close to scoring the first goal. At the break, the game was scoreless.

Probably feeling an usual weakness from Barcelona, Bilbao’s players started the second half with much more intensity and showed a lot more desire to win the game than Barcelona. They were rewarded at the at the 70th minute with a goal by Munain. Toquero could have even doubled Bilbao’s lead five minutes later, but Jose Manuel Pinto made a good save.

Barcelona has lost its first league game since March 22 (2-1 against Real).
