Borussia Dortmund’s midfielder Ilkay Gündogan will probably be one of the most sought-after players once the transfer market opens in January.
The German international seems to have reached his peak of performance in the Bundesliga, and following some masterful displays at both domestic and continental level, most experts believe he’s ready to take the next step.
And his most probable destination could be Spain as both Barcelona and Real Madrid are rumored to start a bidding war for the playmaker in which Los Merengues have reportedly taken the first step.
According to sources, Gündogan’s agent has already made clear that his client’s intentions are to join Real Madrid in the near future so that’s why some other teams that were interested – like Arsenal, Manchester United and even PSG – are already targeting other alternatives. Both parties even signed a pre-contract that established that Los Merengues have the first option to sign the German star once this season is over if they are willing to pay €30 million to Dortmund.
The numbers are the stumbling block in this deal. Real Madrid are reportedly looking to offer no more than €25M, and even though some of that sum — €7M — will be reduced due to Nuri Sahin’s arrival to Signal Iduna Park, the gap is still considerable. Real Madrid are always tipped to spend big, though, and if they really want to land Gündogan it’s probable they will end up getting his signature one way or another.
Gündogan’s arrival will probably push Xabi Alonso out of the team and would add a solid, young midfielder for years to come to the Santiago Bernabeu side. No official confirmation of anything has been said, but this is a move Real Madrid should definitely do if they have the chance.
