5 Biggest Takeaways from Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Action
Tuesday's 5 Biggest Takeways
The final match day of the UEFA Champions League group stage started this Tuesday, and with five out of eight teams already in the next round there were lots of things left to be decided.
Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester City already booked their ticket to play in the Round of 16, but most of them played a spoiler role in the final week as they were going to play a huge role in the definition.
Among the biggest matches in today’s action, Shakhtar Donetsk looked to secure their place in the next round against Manchester United whilst Bayer Leverkusen followed the same objective against Real Sociedad in Group A. Group C had Benfica and Olympiakos battling to advance past the group stage and in Group B, Galatasaray and Juventus tried to decide which team will accompany Real Madrid in the next stage of the competition.
Some of the best players in the world and some of the finest stadiums were only part of the spectacle held today all across Europe. There were some crazy results, a suspended match in Turkey due to weather conditions and a clash of titans in Germany that ended a winning streak in one of the world’s hottest teams as part of the equation.
In the end, only eight teams ended up securing their place in the next round and four others booked a spot in the UEFA Europa League.
Without further ado, please join me through this slideshow as we check the five biggest takeaways in today’s UEFA Champions League action.
5. Definition Of Group A
With Manchester United already qualified and hosting Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen visiting Real Sociedad, the Germans and the Ukrainians battled for the second place in the group. Leverkusen defeated Sociedad, and with Shakhtar’s loss at Old Trafford the Bundesliga outfit qualified in second place of the group.
4. Definition Of Group C
PSG had clinch their spot in the next round and both Olympiacos – hosting Anderlecht – and Benfica – at home against the French side – fought for the second place. Since both games ended with wins for the teams playing at their own stadium, the Greek outfit maintained the second place and advanced to the next round.
3. Real Madrid Dominance
Real Madrid cruised to a solid win against FC Copenhagen away from home. Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric scored for Los Merengues that completed a great Group Stage round where they finished at the top of Group B standings.
2. Galatasaray - Juventus
The match that was supposed to decide which team will end up second in Group B ended up suspended at the 31st minute mark when the contest was scoreless. There was a lot of snow and the weather was unsustainable to hold a match. There is nothing clear regarding when the match will be played, but this situation clearly adds some uncertainty towards the definition of the Group B.
1. Manchester City's Comeback
Down by two goals in the first 12 minutes of the match, Manchester City had a tough challenge ahead of them against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena but The Citizens completed a comeback thanks to goals from David Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov and James Milner. The win ended Bayern’s undefeated run of 26 games but maintained the German side at the top of the standings with Manchester City qualifying in second place.
