Lucas Piazon has been heralded ever since joining Chelsea’s youth academy in 2011. He even looked to make a breakthrough into the first team under former boss, Roberto Di Matteo.
Yet, with the influx of attacking talent that has made their way to west London in the recent years, Piazon has seen himself get pushed to the side in favor of the spectacular Eden Hazard. Both players prefer the left wing role, but it is obvious that very few players, if any, could unseat Hazard from his starting spot.
Chelsea had deemed him in need of first team football before he is ready for the Premier League and last year loaned him out to Spanish side Malaga. This year he was sent to partner club, Vitesse Arnhem, to gain experience in the Dutch Eredivisie.
What a move that was. The payoff has been instantaneous as the young winger has become one of the league’s best players and a main reason for Vitesse sitting in first place at the moment.
The Brazilian has eight goals and six assists in 14 games while maintaining a 74 percent shooting accuracy. With 44 chances created in total and an 80 percent pass completion percentage, Piazon has begun to truly terrorize the Eredevisie’s defenses.
In last weekend’s 6-2 thrashing of PSV Eindhoven, Piazon worked over last year’s runners up by scoring one and assisting two; the best of which was a nice link up with fellow Chelsea loanee, Patrick van Aanholt.
Lucas Piazon still has much to work on if he is to break into Chelsea’s talented midfield, but a the rate he is progressing, Blues fans will see the young player become a star at Stanford Bridge in no time at all.
