Tottenham Hotspur Keeps Failing To Perform Against Top EPL Teams
Tottenham Hotspur hasn’t been able to answer to the contending status many fans put them on at the start of the season.
The London-based side lost superstar Gareth Bale, and despite signing players like Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen to replace him, the Spurs haven’t been able to perform against the best teams in the Premier League. They were severely over-matched against Liverpool, losing 5-0 in front of their fans at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham couldn’t control The Reds’ offense, led by Luis Suárez who scored a brace with goals in each half. Jordan Henderson, John Flanagan and youngster Raheem Sterling also found the back of the net in what was a dominant performance by Liverpool, but Tottenham didn’t help at all with their lackluster defensive play.
The Spurs’ suffered the sending off of midfielder Paulinho, and while their offense wasn’t able to generate much offensively, it was their defense what ultimately let them down against Liverpool. What’s more troubling than the loss, however, is the fact that Tottenham has been dominated by every single top opponent they’ve faced this year.
Tottenham has already suffered losses to Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, and together with draws against Manchester United and Chelsea, has them with only two points out of 15 possible against the top sides in the competition. While a title run seems highly unlikely based on these numbers, the team needs to improve in order to show that they can compete with the best teams in the league.
It might be André Villas-Boas‘ fault, it might be players’, or it might be that, simply, they’re not good enough. Whatever the reason might be, The Spurs need to improve their performance against top teams if they want to have a chance this season.
