If there’s one player that has turned some heads with his performance this year, it’s Olympiakos striker Konstantinos Mitroglou.
The Greek international has been on top form since the start of the season at both domestic and country level, scoring a combined 22 goals in only 19 contests so far. With those numbers, lots of teams are expected to inquire about him when the transfer window opens up in January, but apparently two Premier League sides are considered front-runners to sign him.
According to reports from the press, both Liverpool and Arsenal have expressed interest to sign the striker, and his team has already acknowledged that if he can keep up this form through the reminder of the year it will be very difficult to maintain him with the team.
With a price tag around the €10M, it makes sense if lots of teams are in the race to land him, but it’s difficult to find teams that need him more than The Gunners or The Reds. Both are currently leading the Premier League, and both need to increase their offensive depth. Given the tight title race they’re currently in they can’t afford to land someone who’s unproven at the top level, and Mitroglou already has a lot of international experience.
Arsenal desperately needs an alternative to towering striker Olivier Giroud while Liverpool needs to find an adequate partner for Luis Suárez while Daniel Sturridge is sidelined and possibly beyond as the three would make a very strong forward line.
The talks are only beginning, but it wouldn’t be strange to see Mitroglou featuring in the Premier League in the upcoming year.
