Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal: Breaking Down The Matchup
Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal: matchup breakdown
Once again, we will be witnessing Arsenal taking on Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Last season, the aggregate score read 3-3, but Munich won it on the away goal rule. This time around, fiercer competition is expected between the two sides.
At home, neither side took the game seriously, which is why they were both beaten by two goals. Now, they know the strength of one another, especially since Arsenal is convincingly leading the Premier League while Munich won the UCL last May. Both sides are immensely talented in every single position. They just have to be mentally and physically ready.
Munich likes to control the match throughout, creating chances and not allowing their opponents to threaten their goal. They are more than capable of doing this, but they are facing trickier opponents this year as opposed to last.
Arsenal have added some key pieces that have strengthened their midfield and are a lot more focused when it comes to defending this year -- hence their lead atop the league and decent goal differential. They are much more prepared as a unit for a stern test, even more so this time around. Munich is a club that has been stopped with a unified force of players who want it more.
This will be a series to remember as revenge will be a factor during these two magnificent meetings.
Now, we take a look at which players will have the biggest impact during this series.
Luck of The Draw
These two sides just faced off last season in the same Round of 16. The repetition is simply uncanny. Notice how they are lined up. They couldn't be paired up with other teams? Is this a conspiracy theory? We may never know.
We saw a couple of decent games last season, and now we should see a couple of better ones.
Kroos, Gotze, and Alcantara
These three young midfielders have learned to take control of the game both individually and as a team. When on the field together, they mesmerize defenders everywhere.
If they are healthy, they will bring more glory as two of these three were not a part of the winning equation a year ago.
Dante, Robben and Muller
The first is a defender and the latter two are two of the most influential midfielders that this team has. These three are all leaders in their respective positions and can make or break the outcome of a game in an instant.
This series could actually come down to the performance of these three. If they do not click, their opponents could find open gaps and attack from there. However, there should be no thoughts of this because that will be the most unlikeliest of outcomes.
Ozil and Flamini
The first just arrived this year and has been given the number 11. He is a worthy starter.
The latter was here some years ago before he moved on to AC Milan. Now that he has returned, he has learned to control the midfield, hold the ball and distribute wisely while barking out orders. He is a true leader in this position.
Wilshere, Mertesacker and Ramsey
The man in the middle is the rock of the defense as he is the tallest center-back available on the roster. He is a German international that always stays focused throughout the game and does not let his morale get ruined by the wrong score lines.
The young men on the left and right are two of the heroic members of the midfield. They can create something out of absolutely nothing to steal games from opponents. They can also be known as the saviors of their beloved club.
