The Spirit of Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan is Still Alive

Ever since Jose Mourinho left Inter Milan for Real Madrid, they have struggled to find their rhythm and are only now–under boss Walter Mazzari–finding their form. Inter Milan striker Rodrigo Palacio scored the game-winning goal in the “Derby Della Madonnina” against AC Milan. It was–as always–a hard-fought, well contested match that was eventually settled by a brilliant goal from Palacio.

It is fair to say that both Milan teams are but a shadow of their former selves, but Inter Milan look closer to regaining their former glory. Both teams are far from the top of the Italian Serie A. The Italian derby is the most contested match of the year and pits two teams who play in the same stadium against each other. The city’s glory is on the line every time these two teams line up and the winner has huge bragging rights for the year.

Under Mourinho, Inter won the treble and since he left they have been incapable of winning a single trophy. Their current squad is really quite poor baring Palacio, Fredy Guarin, Rolando and Javier Zanetti. Inter now are closer than ever to securing a Champions League berth for next season, seeing as they have not participated for the past couple of years.

AC Milan, on the other hand, have also struggled terribly of late and have an old, fragile squad that badly needs rebuilding. They controversially acquired Mario Balotelli from Manchester City, but that has not been nearly enough to lift this pathetic team from the ashes. Inter Milan are back. If they can continue this fine form they might just be able to become one of Europe’s powerhouses once again. Keep an eye out for Inter, under new management they will soon be back near the top.
